Winnipeg Humane Society

The Winnipeg Humane Society envisions a community in which all living creatures are afforded the protection they need and the respect they deserve. The design of the building attempts to translate that social commitment into built form by creating the first environmentally sustainable animal shelter in Canada.

The 40,000 square-foot facility which incorporates adoption, holding, and veterinary clinic services was also the first animal shelter in North America to achieve LEED Gold certification. Daylight and natural materials create a calming atmosphere for humans and animals alike while integrating the building with its forested setting. In addition to its Adoption Center, the project includes a full-service veterinary clinic, classrooms, and state-of-the-art animal holding facilities.
